Collecting the art work of others (as opposed to my own!) has become a pleasurable activity for me in the last few years. My teacher at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine arts, Hobson Pitman, one said that "when you buy a work of art, it is the most sincere compliment you can give an artist." Not everyone can afford to buy art, of course, but it is amazing what great original work you can find for less than the cost of the new Michael Jordan sneakers!
Most of the work in my collection is done by artists I know. Most of it is small in scale and was priced in the "hundreds" range. I try to buy most often from galleries, because I think in the end, that is most beneficial to the artist . But in all cases, these are works which I enjoy, marvel at, and find inspiring in their creativity, craft and concept.
